Roaster Spotlight: Carrie Mayle

From Coach Pete: Carrie came to me in order to take her training to the next level. She was struggling with certain aspects of her training and she was looking to work her weaknesses in order to compete in the sport of CrossFit. Fast forward 9 months and Carrie has not only overcome her weaknesses but she has become an absolute machine of a masters athlete at 37 years young. This came as no surprise to me because Carrie is relentless in her pursuit of excellence. We are so happy to have you, Carrie. Thank you for helping make our community so strong. The future is bright!
.
1) What is your why? What gets you out of bed in the morning?
My favorite quote is “Be the best you” so why not live up to that!  Life is so short. We have been given the gift to be here and make the most of each day, so I try to start each day as a new begining. Let go of yesterdays bad but learn from it. Do something each day to not only maximize on your life but to also brighten someone elses.
2) What brought you to Roaster Barbell?
I had followed Roaster for a few years prior to joining and was blown away by the athletes and their abilities. I also have done a few competitions with or against Roaster gym members.  The members I had met in the past have always been so welcoming and genuinely just great people.  I almost came to one of the New Years Eve workouts in the past but chickened out lol.  During covid I buddied up and did facetime workouts with Carmelo out of our own garages. I met Shawn who convinced me to do Murph with him at Roaster (I was so nervous because walking into new places gives me anxiety), who brought me back to a few more classes over the summer and eventually I signed up as a remote athlete. The workouts were extremely hard in the begining and nothing like what I was used to. The wods that are done at Roaster are very different, I questioned many times if I could do them and thought about giving up but I am glad I didn’t because I am starting to see the progress now and it has made it all worth it.
3) What is your favorite movement in the gym?
Oh man. My list of favorites has grown over the past few months. Anything gymnastics or that is in favor of me being vertically challenged lol (I am 5’).
4) What is your least favorite movements in the gym?
Thats easy! Concept2 machines!
5) What is your biggest obstacle so far?
The unexpected. I have learned that nothing EVER goes as planned. I take each moment as they come and just roll with the punches. I used to be a planner but somehow life just keeps getting crazier. Throw covid into the mix this year but running a business with hours that never stop. Being a single mom, homeowner, pets, school closings/delays, myself, staff or child getting sick etc
6) What is your greatest accomplishment so far?
My biggest accomplishment was pretty much 2019. I completed the open in March, then signed up for the Ironman 70.3 with a few friends to honor  a close friend who passed away from brain cancer during the open. I learned how to swim, bought a bike and trained my brain to survive running more than 3 miles (I hated running). 2019 summer was tough, training 5 sports (weightlifting, crossfit, running, biking and swimming) being a single mother and running a business.  I completed the Ironman in July and then refocused 100% back to CrossFit and made the online qualifier in November in the Masters division.
7) If you could have lunch with anyone in history, who would you choose?
My grandmother. She was the best cook, we would play euchre after we ate and her stories were the best.  She was one of those Grandmas that said what she wanted and just didn’t care lol.
8) How has the gym affected your life outside of the gym?
The gym is my “me” time. It is my release from life. It is a place that I can continue to grow, feel accomplished and it helps build my self confidence. The gym has brought on new friendships and surrounding myself around people who are positive and encouraging. Having the gym keeps me on a routine and helps me to not get lost or sucked into the negative parts of life. It’s a stress reliever.
9) What is the most important part of your day?
Most important part to my day is lifting. I impatiently wait for 9pm hour to see what the next days workouts will be. Two other favorite parts of my day is when I finally lay down in my bed. I am a person that tries to get 10,000 things done in a 16 hour time frame and if I stop or sit down then I will probably pass out. So when everything is finally done and I am able to crash, it feels amazing. The other part of my day that I look forward to and really enjoy is my sons bedtime routine. We read in his bed before I tuck him in and tell him goodnight.
10) In your opinion, what is the most important aspect of life?
Family, Friendships, Happiness, Hard Work, Love and to always stay true to who you are.
11) If you had the choice, would you have infinite strength or infinite cardiovascular endurance?
Strength. Everyday life needs strength more then endurance.  Carrying a case of water, holding a child, moving furniture, carrying a laundry basket, moving rocks or logs etc
12) Who is someone that you look up to and why?
David Goggins. He made something of himself from nothing. He stays true to himself.  He blocks out the negative noise and always rises above. He pushes through pain and accomplishes the unthinkable.  Goggins is very motivating and shares his journey, the struggles and is relatable.  Goggins was a huge driving factor of my ironman training and when things would get tough during that training, I asked myself “What would Goggins do?” Thats all it took for me to snap back mentally and finish what ever it was I had to accomplish.
13) What has been the most impactful thing you have learned in the gym about yourself?
The mental game! The mind is so powerful. The body can do just about anything but its the mind you have to train. I have learned that 99% of my failures are becasue I failed myself mentally before or during the training session.  I have always battled self doubt, the fear of not being good enough or living up to expectations but fighting through these workouts have helped me fight through these negative demons and transition them. I am no longer looking at my struggles as black/white failures but finding a positive, learning and celebrating the wins of the progress. Pushing through the mental desire to quit when it is hard and realizing I have weaknesses and the only way to turn them into strenghts is to start somewhere and just keep pushing.
14) Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Thank you to the Roaster community for accepting me, pushing me and all that you have done. Like I said earlier, new places give me anxiety but you all have been so welcoming. Joining this community has been one of the best things to happen in 2020.

The Open: 2021

Every year, hundreds of thousands of athletes from around the world participate in the largest CrossFit event in the world. We call this event The Open. The Open is the first of multiple stages designed to find the fittest on Earth in multiple divisions. What makes The Open unique is that the participants get to complete the workouts from their Affiliate with their own community and coaches. In 2021, The Open will begin Thursday, March 11th and will last for about three weeks. Every week, the director of The CrossFit Games, Dave Castro, will release a workout or two that must be completed and submitted within a small window if it is to be officially counted.

So what does this mean for the average CrossFitter? With the ultimate goal of The CrossFit Games to find the fittest on Earth, where do you fit into this equation? Thats a great question! At Roaster Barbell, we use The Open as an opportunity to get together, have some fun, and compete against ourselves. The Open is a way of being part of something bigger than ourselves.

For some, The Open is their opportunity to do something they’ve never done before. Things are always impossible, until they’re not. Maybe double unders have been your goat. Or maybe, you’re looking for that extra motivation to get that first pull-up. The Open offers those opportunities and much more.

The Open is inclusive. In recent years CrossFit HQ has made a concerted effort in making The Open accessible to anyone. 2021 will be no different. Just like any CrossFit class in the world, The Open is infinitely scalable meaning anyone, of any ability can throw down with the rest of the world and have some fun in the process.

For some, The Open is their ultimate proving grounds, their Super Bowl of the fitness world. And for some its just another workout of the day and an opportunity to get better. At the end of the day, lets not forget why all of us are involved with CrossFit and fitness in general; we are pursuing improved health and fitness while improving our quality of life. The Open is just another arena for this to take place!

-Coach Pete

Member Spotlight: Cassie Gaye

From Coach Pete: Cassie is one of those athletes that is just special. Whether its her ability to learn new things quickly, be supportive of others, or her desire to become the best version of herself, she just gets it done with all of her heart. One of the most important characteristics an athlete can have in order to be successful is their ability to be coachable. Her ability to accept criticism and apply it moving forward has allowed her to overcome many obstacles on her journey. Being a coach herself at the high school varsity level has given her great perspective on how to be coachable and be a great teammate. Besides her high level performance in the gym, her ability to influence and help others is really where she excels. Cassie is truly a great teammate and everything a coach could want in an athlete. This is why her success is far from a surprise. Thank you Cassie for your continued effort and your ability to lift others up around you.

.

.

1 – What is your “why”? What gets you out of bed in the morning?

My goal is to be the best version of myself everyday for Zola, my family, Jillian, my friends and for whoever needs me to help get themselves out of bed in the morning (students, colleagues, the people at the coffee shop, members at the gym, etc.).

2 – If you could accomplish 1 thing in the next 10 years, athletically or professionally, what would that be?

Stop living to work and start working to live.

3 – What brought you to Roaster Barbell?

100% the Community. Around this time 3-Years ago I walked into Roaster 1.0 with a huge list of all the things (I thought) I couldn’t do. I saw the professionalism and the culture of accountability that Pete instilled in the gym and I was all in. You are the average of the people you surround yourself with. There are still things I can’t do, yet, but I know I will get there with the help of the people in this gym.

4 – What is your favorite thing to do in the gym?

Long WODs with some kind of barbell work involved.

(And shooting the shit with everyone before, during and after class! Some of our random conversations make my day!)

5 – What is your least favorite thing in the gym?

Any isometric accessory stuff.

6 – How has your training in the gym impacted your life outside of the gym?

(1) Major anxiety & stress relief! Getting your workout done before the sunrises is the best way to start your day off with a WIN. This rolls into (2) Enjoying life’s little moments more. When you find a routine and discipline your mind feels less cluttered and starts creating space to let the good stuff in. This helps with (3) building relationships. Slowing down and taking the time to get to know people is also part of the “good stuff.” (4) Confidence. Achieving a goal, mentally pushing through a challenge, and physically feeling better is a major confidence boost. You stand a little taller knowing what you can do.

7 – In your opinion, what is the most important aspect of life?

Relationships

8 – If you could be any professional CF Games Athlete, who would you be and why?

Julie Foucher, currently a medical student at the Cleveland Clinic. She just seems like the type of person that does CrossFit because it improves her wellbeing, not for the trophy, which is what most of us are here for! She makes a living helping others who are sick and on her free time she shares her insight on how to live a healthier life. Knowledge is powerful but it is even more powerful when it is shared with others.

9 – What aspects of health and fitness do you find most difficult and why?

Diet and Nutrition. Working out is easy. You make time for it, you go to the gym, and you’re surrounded by people who are there for the same reasons as you. Going out with friends, going to a restaurant, family parties, or living with a person who may not particularly value it as much as you do makes it hard to eat the things you should. Also, life is fast! There’s no denying it can be hard to make time to actually cook for yourself versus stopping somewhere quick for lunch.

10 – If you had the choice, would you rather have infinite strength, or infinite cardiovascular endurance?

Strength. As long as I have an able body I better be able to stand it up tall.

11 – What would you say to someone that asks you about the gym and was looking to get started?

You will always have weaknesses and there will always be someone better than you. Get over it. Comparison is the thief of joy. Set goals for yourself and when you achieve them, no matter how small, celebrate them. You’ll love this place because I guarantee the people you start to workout with on a daily basis will notice and celebrate with you!

13 – Do you have anything else you would like to add?

Go Browns.

Member Spotlight: Molly Lamb

FROM COACH PETE: Molly is apart of a special group that means a lot to me. She was here for our 1st class over 5 years ago at our first location. We may have had humble beginnings but Molly believed in our mission and has helped make that mission a reality. The growth Molly has gone through is a direct result of her making a goal and sticking too it with dedication and commitment.  She made up her mind to be the best version of herself and I have no doubt that she will do just that. Molly, I thank you for your commitment to this community and for being here with us through all the ups and downs. Your contributions to helping make this community so amazing has not gone unnoticed. I appreciate you!
.
.
.
1 – What is your “why”? What gets you out of bed in the morning?
This was definitely a choice and decision I had made for myself years ago. It was a vision I had and then became a purpose. Chasing after that strong confident woman/partner I wanted to be for myself. Which turned into a lifestyle change for me. Overall, I wanted to be a better person for myself and continue to strive on that path… Definitely Worth it!
2 – If you could accomplish 1 thing in the next 10 years, athletically or professionally, what would that be?
It’s hard to choose one thing. I have many! I Still want to be Fit and Healthy Doing what I love. Surrounded by great people who continue to support my growth and bring my best out. If I had to choose one it would be Exploring a national Park.
3 – What brought you to Roaster Barbell?
It was definitely the people. I’ve known some of them already. I went to school with my coach and he already had a future plan in place for Roaster Barbell. Happy I stepped foot into those boot camps in the beginning! I’ve been consistent ever since Roaster Barbell opened. The coaching and programing, I’ve seen results not only in myself, but within the community at Roaster Barbell. Love how everyone cheers everyone on and helps each other aim for their goals. Plus, I wanted some variety into my workout routine!
4 – What is your favorite thing to do in the gym?
Weight lifting! Especially those bicep curls and deadlifts.
5 – What is your least favorite thing in the gym?
I’d have to go with wallballs.
6 – If you would meet anyone in history and have lunch with them, who would it be and why?
Well, I will never forget his smile. Heath Ledger. He had a gift and a talent not many actors had which made him stand out. I would love to have a conversation with him about his films over lunch with a view.
7 – How has your training in the gym impacted your life outside of the gym?
It has helped enhance my confidence, make me a better leader and an example for others who are just starting out in the fitness world.
8 – In your opinion, what is the most important aspect of life?
Mental health without a doubt. It doesn’t get much buzz. I am happy the awareness is around it now. It’s something I feel everyone needs to be aware of. A good mindset is key if you want change. It doesn’t happen overnight. Health would be another one. Taking care of yourself.
9 – If you could be any professional CF Games Athlete, who would you be and why?
This is a fun one! I love her athleticism and drive. I’d have to say Brooke Wells. I love that we both have blonde hair!
10 – What aspects of health and fitness do you find most difficult and why?
Finding that balance with nutrition and your workout routine. Eating enough and right foods. Definitely a practice. Better than it was before. The better you eat, better your workouts are and feel.
11 – If you had the choice, would you rather have infinite strength, or infinite cardiovascular endurance?   Infinite of strength! I like that feeling of being powerful and strong
12 – What would you say to someone that asks you about the gym and was looking to get started?
I would say try it out! The coaching is great and the community makes you feel welcome!
13 – Do you have anything else you would like to add?
I am very happy I chose Roaster Barbell as my consistent home gym and remember, trust the process. Remember to enjoy it! Your competition is in the mirror.

Member Spotlight: Kim Cannella

From Coach Pete: Kim’s success in the gym is a direct result of her ability to be coachable as well as her incredible consistency. She just recently hit her 3 year Roaster Barbell anniversary and she seems to really be hitting her stride in all aspects of her fitness. Its been an awesome experience to watch Kim grow into the athlete she is today and I look forward to continuing to watch her grow even more. Thank you Kim for being such a positive influence on our community!
.
.
1 – What is your “why”? What gets you out of bed in the morning?
The opportunity to learn, grow, and help others every day. I strive to continue to better myself on a daily basis and to help others grow as well.
2 – If you could accomplish 1 thing in the next 10 years, athletically or professionally, what would that be?
If I could accomplish one thing in the next 10 years it would be to continue to stay fit and maintain a healthy/active lifestyle.
3 – What brought you to Roaster Barbell?
My sister, Tina. She kept bugging me that I should go to this gym with her after work. One day I finally decided I would give it a shot. I had no idea what I was doing when I showed up and everything being talked about was like a foreign language to me because this was the first real gym I had ever been too. Once I started showing up with Tina on a regular basis I was hooked and it has been one of the best additions to my life.
4 – What is your favorite thing to do in the gym?
My favorite thing to do at the gym is any of the gymnastic movements.
5 – What is your least favorite thing in the gym?
My least favorite thing used to be the assault bike, but now since those are gone I would have to say wallballs…short girl problems.
6 – If you would meet anyone in history and have lunch with them, who would it be and why?
JK Rowling. She is a best-selling author in history and created my most beloved book series Harry Potter. I grew up reading the books and watching the movies. She created a world that felt so real to me and I would like to learn more about her creative process in developing the series.
7 – How has your training in the gym impacted your life outside of the gym?
Training in the gym has impacted my life outside of the gym by making me feel more accomplished and I think just helping me feel more confident in myself.
8 – In your opinion, what is the most important aspect of life?
The most important aspect in life is family. My family means the world to me and I couldn’t imagine my life without them. They have helped and continue to help shape me into the person I am today.
9 – If you could be any professional CF Games Athlete, who would you be and why?
Any of them. They are all very inspiring. I think just being able to make it to the CF Games is an amazing accomplishment and shows how much hard work and dedication they have.
10 – What aspects of health and fitness do you find most difficult and why?
Healthy diet. I love food and it is very hard for me to have self control and turn down anything that might be considered unhealthy.
11 – If you had the choice, would you rather have infinite strength, or infinite cardiovascular endurance?
Infinite cardiovascular endurance.
12 – What would you say to someone that asks you about the gym and was looking to get started?
I would tell them that Roaster Barbell is a great place to start their fitness journey. Pete is truly a fantastic coach and the community at Roaster Barbell is phenomenal. Everyone is so welcoming and accepting of of each other, regardless of what level of fitness you are at. I know when I first started I was nervous and slightly intimidated but quickly realized everyone is there for the same reason; to get a good workout in, improve on themselves, and to support one another.
13 – Do you have anything else you would like to add?
Keep showing up and do your best and you will continue to see improvement!

Member Spotlight: Brian Papay

From Coach Pete: Brian Papay is the definition of driven. He is a regular at our 5am class and I’ve always said that 5am’ers are special people. Its takes a strong “why” to be at the gym at 5am all week, week after week. Brian takes any challenge head-on with everything he’s got. Just this week we did a sled workout that was intended to be a fairly slow pace but I knew what was about to happen after the 3-2-1-Go. As expected, Brian took off in a dead sprint to begin his mile sled drag at 70#. I found myself laughing out loud as I watched him fade into the 5am darkness. This scenario is pretty common, I overheard him once call this plan, “crash and burn.” In contrast, Brian’s extra training outside of the gym has given him a new perspective. He has been training for a 26 mile race which has forced him to slow his training runs down in order to build his trail volume. Its been interesting to hear about his race training. The picture that I am trying to paint is that Brian is heavily invested in his health and fitness. Stories like his are incredibly meaningful to me because I know where he started. Brian’s ability to work hard while remaining humble is incredibly motivating to those around him and he has been a great teammate to those in our community. Its been a pleasure working with you, Brian. Thank you for calling Roaster Barbell your home.
.
.
1 – What is your why? What gets you out of bed in the morning?
I try to become a better person daily while being happy and healthy. I strive to be mentally and physically stronger to set a good example for my two boys.
2 – What is special about Roaster Barbell that keeps you coming back?
Its been life changing. Roaster Barbell woke this 40 year old man up. There’s something about this amazing community of hard workers that push and challenge you to become better daily. Together, we raise that bar, work hard, and crush our goals. Led by Coach Pete, a great coach and even better person. Its been a tough year for everyone (Covid) but the great positive leadership hasn’t gone unnoticed.
3 – When was your tipping point that helped you get started in fitness?
I just remember being out of shape and wanting a change. Found CrossFit at 230lbs. First workout was horrible and thought I was going to die but just kept coming back. A little over 3 years later I’m fairly fit and weigh 167lbs.
4 – What events are you training for?
Leave No Trace trail marathon on November 7th.
5 – What is your favorite thing in the gym?
I prefer cardio, light weight or body weight workouts.
6 – What is your least favorite thing in the gym?
Heavy weight workouts.
7 – Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Hopefully 50 and fit, moving like a youngster.
8 – What has been the most difficult obstacle on your journey?
Probably the lifestyle change. Putting my health as the priority. Building my daily routines.
9 – What do you look for in a gym?
Im at a point in my life where I try to surround myself with positive, inspiring, and great people. Community is high on the list of things I look for.
10 – What advice would you have for someone who is considering Roaster Barbell?
Give it a shot! Show up, work hard, and earn the results you want to see.

Member Spotlight: Damian Beifus

From Coach Pete: If I were asked what characteristics would make a great teammate, everything Damian is about would be my answer. Damian is humble, hard working, intelligent, and selfless. The fitness world is full of ego as well as loud personalities and bold claims. Damian is none of those things, his personality is refreshing and extremely coachable. His performance on just about everything is exceptional but you would never know because he’ll never brag on himself. Damian consistently finds himself among the best performers in the gym because he shows up, gets to work, and listens far more than he speaks on a daily basis. Damian’s best characteristics have nothing to do with fitness though. He is genuinely a great husband, father, and friend and is an amazing role model for our community. Thank you for for being a huge part of why our community is so great!

.

.

1 – What was your motivation to join Roaster Barbell?

  • I had gotten out of shape and was looking to join a gym, I was never really sold on CrossFit but wanted something with structure, schedule, and accountability.  I was living in Berea, so I searched for a local gym; after finding Roaster’s website, I reached out to Pete.  In talking with Pete and seeing his experience (education) in exercise science/coaching, it made Roaster stand up above the others.

2 – What is your why? What gets you out of bed in the morning?

  • Family – whether providing through work or leading by example, my family is always at the root of those decisions.  I take great pride in everything I do and am constantly striving to put forth the best version of me.

3 – How does your training improve your life outside of the gym?

  • It has also given me the energy to stay active with my son.  Work and life in general can be draining, but it is great having the energy to chase after and play with my 2 year old, even after a long day.  All those heavy carries pay off now when halfway through a walk my son insists on being carried home.

4 – Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

  • No set path, just continuing to enjoy what I do and those I surround myself with.

5 – What makes Roaster Barbell different than other training you have done?

  • It’s varied and a lot of movements/programming that I would never do on my own.  I would never do 100 burpees for time on my own, but knowing there are others around going through the same pain makes you want to keep going.  I had also never done any Olympic lifting prior to joining Roaster, so it has been a humbling yet rewarding experience working to get better at something new.

6 – What is your favorite movement in the gym?

  • Concept 2 machines – I like the challenge they present mentally and how they can completely change a workout or impact other movements.

7 – What is your least favorite movement in the gym?

  • Lunges – really any variation, no thanks.

8 – What is your sports background?

  • Soccer, I started playing around 3 yrs old and played competitively through college.

9 – What is your proudest athletic achievement?

  • I was fortunate to earn an athletic scholarship to play soccer in college, and currently still sit in the Top 10 for career games played at the school.  Seeing that hard work and effort pay off with 4 years of consistent and injury free play is my proudest achievement over any other athletic accolades.

10 – What advice would you have for someone looking to start at Roaster Barbell but is unsure?

  • Reach out to Pete and stop by the gym to see firsthand.  Pete does a great job evaluating and scaling movements to your abilities, the community is supportive and great, there is a ton of equipment (and more being added), the list of pros can go on and on, I wish I had found Roaster sooner.

Member Spotlight: Ahren Booher

From Coach Pete: 2020 has forced many of us to make decisions about our lives and make us look a little closer at the decisions we make. For Ahren, the downtime in the spring shed light on just how much she needed to be in the gym consistently for both physical and mental health. Ahren’s spotlight was created because when gyms were given the green light to open, her commitment to herself and her goals were above and beyond anything we had seen from her before. A renewed sense of purpose and commitment has made Ahren one of the most consistent morning athletes in recent memory. Ahren’s commitment to herself has accelerated her progress as well as her happiness. The life of a realtor is fast paced and ever changing but Ahren has found a way to make it work, to hold herself accountable, and to make every appointment with herself. Thank you, Ahren, for being an inspiration to us all.

1 – What brought you to Roaster Barbell?

I have had a deep love/hate relationship with CF from the moment I completed my first workout 7ish years ago. Unfortunately, my first gym closed and I bopped around from gym to gym for a couple years. I struggled to find the community and structure I was looking for. My friend and colleague, Nikki Miller was the one who first suggested I try Roaster. I knew Pete through the community and reached out to drop in for my first class. The rest is history!

2 – What are your training goals?

My goals are a lot different than they were when I first started CF. Most of the time my goals are more related to fitting into my pants… On a serious note, my competitive side will always be there so I always want to improve, however working out has become a much more mental health thing than a physical one.

3 – What keeps you coming back for more?

My first year as a member I struggled getting into a groove. I have a very demanding job that frequently keeps me up later than I’d like. After losing my gym time due to Covid and seeing what a major impact it had on my mental health, I promised I would make working out part of my daily routine at least 5 days a week. Of course the community is a large part of what keeps me coming back and it’s just a non-negotiable part of my day. Show up no matter what!

4 – What is your favorite part of the Roaster Barbell experience?

The structure and coaching. So many other gyms don’t start class on time, have inexperienced coaches, members with dangerous form. I am grateful to be somewhere that even after almost a decade of fitnessing I am able to learn so many new techniques and tips! I even coached and had my Level 1!

5 – How has training improved your life outside of the gym?

I am a different person when I am working out and eating healthy. My boyfriend is grateful that the mood swings are much less frequent! Again, I have a demanding stressful job and working out at Roaster makes me be a better business owner and leader.

6 – What have you accomplished that you never thought you would never do?

Consistently getting up, even on weekends, by 6:30 am and making it to a morning workout! I always said my schedule was too demanding and morning workouts were not for me. I have missed one class due to demand post Covid!

7 – What has training taught you about yourself?

Training has really taught me to stay in my lane and give up control. I am a very social and outgoing person. It is sometimes hard for me to let others lead. I also don’t like getting beat. Roaster is very humbling gym. We have so many high level athletes. Being honest, at first it was a little discouraging. Now I have learned how to block out what everyone else is doing and push myself to accomplish my own goals.

8 – What is your favorite gym activity?

I love the gymnastics movements, snatching, and overhead squats.

9 – What is your least favorite gym activity?

I hate, hate, double hate, WALL BALLS!… oh, and the bike sucks too.

10 – What advice would you have for someone who is looking to get started?

So many people think they have to “get ready” to start CF. It’s like they think they have to train for a few months to prepare themselves. That’s not true. Just show up and be ok with where you are. If you keep putting off the start, you will never reach your goals!

11 – Is there anything else you would like to add?

I love my Dog, Luna! And, thank you Pete for allowing me to be apart of this amazing community!

Demich Takes 2nd at 2020 MFC

The dust has now settled on the 2020 Masters Fitness Collective in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Masters athletes from all over the world converged on this one of a kind event to showcase their years and years of hard work and dedication. A masters athlete is a functional fitness competitor who is 35 years old or older. There are categories for men and women respectively with age groups that span 5 years each. Age groups at the 2020 MFC included 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64 and 65+.

Our very own Theresa Demich earned her way into the 60-64 year old division and left her mark on the weekend finishing in an outstanding 2nd place overall while racking up 4 first place event finishes. Competition in the functional fitness world rewards those who stay consistent. Theresa had a slow start and needed to finish strong in order to inch her way onto the podium. The weekend consisted of 10 events covering a broad range of skills and tasks. Theresa has never been one to back down from a challenge. Her positive mindset and ability to overcome obstacles paved the way for her strong finish.

Theresa is not one to brag so I will do it for her. The amount of hard work and dedication that Theresa has been putting in on a consistent basis for years is truly unique. Ive been a professional coach for 10 years and Ive never worked with a 60+ year old who out trains athletes 1/3 her age like Theresa. To say she is an inspiration for all ages is an understatement. It has truly been a pleasure being a stepping stone on Theresa’s journey and we are looking forward to taking on the next challenge!

Congrats again to Theresa for taking home 2nd at the 2020 Masters Fitness Collective!
